The idea of farming and farm life has been an interest of ours since we purchased our first 40 acres of land 24 years ago. We started clearing fields, opening up areas to enhance the beautiful mountain views and building our home.
A few years later we were approached by a neighbor about grazing his beef cattle in our field and we decided that it would be good for the pasture . We found it so relaxing to watch them grazing or meandering around the field. We were drawn to watching them whether we were working inside or outside the house, and we loved having them around.
In late August we purchased this small herd to keep them from the slaughterhouse. Ray was able to get a shelter up before winter and our first farming adventure began.
We bought a bull shortly after starting, and for four years we bred, birthed and expanded our herd.
We loved raising cows but the reality was we disliked the idea of slaughtering them for beef so we the decision was made to sell the herd.
Several years passed by without any grazing animals to enjoy and then we heard about alpacas.
We started visiting alpaca farms and attending shows. We fell in love with these gentle animals and enjoyed all the friends we were making in our search to learn more about them.
We purchased our first alpacas in 2002 and our new farming adventure began.
We now have 23 alpacas grazing in our fields, and 7 crias due for 2008. We love our daily interactions with them. Whether it's coffee in the barn, halter training or being on cria watch.
We have met and made many new friends in the alpaca industry and we love that this is a business we can do together and supplement our income.
